Best Exercise to Lose Weight: Starting Your Search

Getting the feeling that your weight is starting to become quite a problem? Then you might want to start your search for exercise routines as early on as possible in order to avoid health issues later on. Now, when it comes to looking for the best exercise to lose weight, the first thing you’d want to give attention to would be to realize that there’s no such thing as the “perfect weight loss routine.” Each individual will have different factors to deal with which will ultimately affect the results that they get.

Much like considering swimming when you don’t know how to swim or picking up jogging when your joints aren’t really able to handle the impact, the exercise you choose should be able to fill not only the results that you want to get but also your capabilities, age, gender, physical condition and even your comfort level. Do your research based on the factors mentioned above and not on what other people say. Yes, the amount of calories that you burn is an important consideration, but you probably won’t be able to get it if you are either uninterested or are physically unprepared to do the routine properly.

One good exercise that you might want to consider starting off with first would probably be walking because of the well rounded benefits that it offers as well as being easy and suited enough for the factors mentioned above. You can start off slow and then gradually build it up if you feel like you’re ready to handle a little bit more or you can even consider it as your preparatory exercise for something much more challenging later on. If you feel that you really don’t have the time to go outside and do your walking, used treadmills can prove to be just the solution to the problem. There are plenty of them in the market; all you need to do is look for them. Your search for the best exercise to lose weight should not be determined for you by other people. The considerations mentioned above will point you in the right direction so make sure to keep them in mind.

Best Exercise Equipment For 2011

The season for stuffing ourselves with turkey and mince pies will soon be at an end for another year. As you look down at your waistline you may decide enough is enough and start the anual hunt for that magical piece of at home exercise equipment that will help you lose that excess weight.

Many will be seduced by the latest exercise gadget that happens to be out at the moment that promises fast results with little work but sadly they rarely work.

Better would be to take a look at my Top 3 pieces of exercise equipment that I believe will work for you if you’re prepared to put in a little bit of work and use them regularly.

The Step360

The Step360 takes traditional step to the next level. Circular in shape like a pair of donuts stacked one on top of the other the Step 360 is a pair of inflatable tubes with a platform on top. This simple device is more challenging than a normal step because it’s unstable and wobbles when you step up and down. This instability not only makes your workout more challenging but also a lot more fun.

Unlike other pieces of exercise equipment on the market today it’s not a gimmick it really works. I’ve had one for over for weeks now and love it. You get a great cardio workout and if you attach the supplied exercise band a fairly reasonable strength training workout as well.

Take a look at my Step360 Videos page for more information.

The TRX Suspension System

Although more for the seasoned and fairly fit exercisers the TRX Suspension System is a great addition to anyone wanting to get more from there body-weight exercises.

The TRX is basically a pair of elasticated straps that can be attached to a doorway. Using the straps you can extend and make more challenging a variety (Over 300) body-weight exercises. The TRX is lightweight, easy to use and will introduce not only challenge but also fun to your existing workout.

The KettleWorx

The Kettleworx system uses a KettleBell and a series of great workout DVD’s to give you a fantastic workout. Because you combine both fat burning cardio and strength training in a single short workout you can get great results in a much shorter time than cardio only training.

This system isn’t for those that don’t want to work hard as it’s very challenging and will get you hot and sweaty. It’s major advantage is its simplicity and the speed you can get results if you use it regularly.

The three pieces of exercise equipment above aren’t the sexiest pieces of equipment on the market (although The Step360 is close) but they’re simple, well made and will without a doubt help you in your fat loss goals.

Sadly I think people will be seduced by the new and shiny gadgets that claim to do all the work for you and the equipment that really works will be ignored.

Still I’ve done my duty the choice is as always yours :)

Exercise Without Exercising – The Madness Continues

ExerciseIt’s official I’m finally going to tear my hair out and look like my follicly challenged husband.

Tell me how can you possibly get the benefits of exercise without actually exercising? Or to put it another way how can you exercise effectively without getting hot and sweaty?

Well you can’t. I don’t care how much blathering and miss information the Infomercials put out you can’t get an effective calorie burning workout with out working out! You’d think it was obvious but apparently common sense isn’t very common anymore.

Don’t be conned into spending a small fortune on an exercise device that says it’ll do all the work for you and then claim that you can still get fantastic results cos it isn’t true. I must have written on this subject so many times you may be getting bored with it but it makes me so cross I just can’t help but come back to it.

The Rules:

  1. Keep away from any piece of equipment that claim you don’t have to do any work to get great results
  2. If it sounds to good to be true it is to good to be true
  3. Watch out for lines like “Lose a dress size in a week” or “Burn 5lbs of Fat a week whilst watching TV” Good equipment doesn’t need hype to sell it.
  4. Use common sense – do the claims sound reasonable?
  5. Does it look like real exercise (would using it make you hot and sweaty) If not forget it.
  6. Does it cost more than 0 (That’s my limit if it costs more than that I actually want to try it before I’ll buy)
  7. Does the product promote healthy eating? (Not dieting)

Products I like and meet my criteria would include:

The KettleWorx
The Truth About Abs

I can’t include The Step 360 yet as I haven’t tried it yet but I’m hoping to get hold of one soon and I’ll let you know how I get on.

Exercise Without Exercising – The Madness Continues

Is Walking Good Exercise?

Anything that causes your muscle activity to increase and your heart and lungs to work harder will count as exercise.  Even walking – in fact especially walking.  Walking has some amazingly good advantages when it comes to getting fit in that it is free, absolutely anyone who is reasonably physically sound can do it, and being out in the fresh air will do you nothing but good.

I have to admit that if I did not own dogs I would not go for a walk every day, especially in the winter when the rain is sluicing down in buckets from an icy, grey sky and a lazy wind is blowing.  A lazy wind may sound nice, but in Yorkshire it means a wind that blows through you as opposed to going round you, taking your breath away and chilling you to the bone in the process!

But even in the worst stormy winter days there is always something to see along the quiet tracks and fields that we’re lucky enough to live near. In the spring and summer, walking is pure delight, with something new to see almost every day, from the beginning of March when the first blossom starts to form, through to November when the last red leaves drop.

So mood is raised, your skin gets a good dose of vitamin D from the daylight and you burn some calories as well.  Okay so strolling along admiring the view in summer isn’t going to burn that many, but when the wind is howling and all you want to do is get the walk over with and get home it is surprising how briskly you can stride out :)

Walking for an hour at a brisk pace that makes you feel warm,  slightly breathless and a bit sweaty will tone all your leg muscles, strengthen your leg bones and burn around 200 cal.  If you want to increase the toning effect of your walking, find a hill to stride up, which makes your thighs, hamstrings and butt muscles work much harder.  Walking does not have the same high impact stresses on the joints as running does, and is suitable for anyone.

Home Exercise Gym Basics

If you’ve saved up some money and want to invest in some new equipment for your home exercise gym, the pieces you buy need to be used for several different workouts.  There is no point spending your money on anything that targets just one muscle group at this point.  Thinking broad can save you money right now and help you in your workouts.

The first things that come to my mind as being necessary items are dumbbells or free weights and something to sit on while doing certain exercises.  There are many different options for free weights and dumb bells and there are pros and cons to both.  You could buy dumbbells that are of varying weights or you can buy free weights that you can change the weight of depending on your desire.  The con with the latter is that changing the weights can be a time waster, but buying all of the dumbbells at different weight sizes can be more expensive.

A good compromise for me is to get a few lighter dumbbells (2 lbs, 3lbs, 5lbs) for use when you are doing aerobic routines and just need a bit more weight to push yourself, and get free weights with adjustable weight options for the heavier lifting exercises.  This is an ideal start to a fitness home gym.

A lot of people will use a household chair while doing exercises requiring you to sit or spend unnecessary money on a workout bench.  The perfect solution is a multipurpose balance ball.  Try sitting on one of those while doing shoulder presses or laying on one while doing chest presses.  It forces you to work your muscles harder to balance yourself and do the actual workout.  With a small investment you will increase your productivity exponentially.

These few items together are not that expensive especially when you think of how expensive a gym membership is a month.  A smart investment now will save you hundreds of dollars in the long run.  Click here for some really wonderful and inexpensive options.

Affordable Home Exercise Gyms

What inspired me to start working out at home was getting fed up with the cost of my gym and being annoyed by how crowded it was.  I wanted to make a home exercise gym that I could comfortably work out in whenever I wanted.  At first, it is daunting because of the cost of some of the larger and better gym equipment out there.  Your first few purchases have to be affordable and highly effective at the same time.  Here are some of the better options:

Stamina InStride Plus Electronic Stepper

Cardio machines are often bulky and take up a lot of space at home.  The Electronic Stepper pictured to the left takes up 197 square inches of space!  That’s insanely tiny.  Its inexpensive and is a great start to every home exercise gyms.

Other items to consider at the always useful resistance bands.  You can use a resistance band at home to replicate dozens of exercises that you would normally perform with a dumbbell or barbell.  But if you want to use weights, go for an adjustable dumbbell.  The great thing about using adjustable dumbbells is because it is an investment.  You can always add on to it and it can be used for so many different exercises.  And then the weights can also be used if you get a barbell later on as well.

Weider X-Factor Door Gym

One of the best starter items out there is the Weider X-Factor Door Gym.  It easily attaches to your door and becomes an exercise gym.  Using resistance band technology, it creates a workout for your entire body and takes up barely any space.  It cost equates to about two months of a gym membership.  It will work as an effective workout device while you save up for something that works you a bit more.

Cheap doesn’t always equate to good quality, so be sure to do your research before purchasing anything.  Always remember to start with exercise gym pieces that are versatile and work many muscle groups before purchasing pricier equipment that works only certain muscle groups.  Home exercise gyms aren’t usually built in a day, so take your time to make sure that yours is catered to exactly what you need.

More Versatile Home Exercise Gym Options

Buying a few well thought out gym pieces can save you so much money in the long run.  We’ve covered some of the more basic options, so lets move on to a few items that are staples in many home exercise gyms.

A great exercise bar is a necessity.  There are many different sizes, styles, shapes and weights to choose from.  For starters, thinking in a versatile manner, I would go with the simple, straight, light gym bar.  If you already have those free weights that I recommended previously, you have some started weights to go with your gym bar.

You may want to purchase some heavier weights too.  These can also be used on your adjustable dumbbells as well.  Down the line as you get stronger and need a challenge, you can easily add on to your current home exercise gym.

You may want to get some cardio exercise in your workout as well.  Treadmills, stair climbers and elliptical can be really pricey.  If you don’t have a bicycle (which I always recommend for health workout reasons and to save gasoline) you can buy a low priced product that turns your bike into a stationary workout bike.  I think this product is fantastic because it allows me to burn a ton of calories while watching my nightly TV shows.

By now, you should have the basics of a complete home exercise gym.  The stationary bike for cardiovascular exercise, the light dumbbells to use with the workouts you find on TV, the heavier free weights and gym bar for a bevy of other workouts and your balance ball to do your exercises on as well as for stretching after.

The next step would be items specifically geared towards one muscle group or a more expensive home fitness gym if you are interested.  For the time being, click here to check out the items I mentioned early in this page.

The Best Home Exercise Gym Item!

Of all the equipment I have used over the years, there is one that I always go back to for its versatility, cost and effectiveness.  The Resistance Band!

Lately, I have been doing a lot of traveling for work and to visit family members who live in other states.  When on the road, I am not always sure of when or where I will be able to get a good workout in.  Certain hotels have fitness centers, but they are unreliable and usually not very good.  I prefer to bring my personal home exercise gym with me instead.  It’s small and light, so it fits into my carry on bag.

Resistance bands are sold in different levels of elasticity, but I would recommend just getting one medium resistance band to get you started.  Don’t get me wrong, having several different elasticities is fantastic, but not required.  I just have one and it suits me just fine.

Most bands will come with a door attachment for easy use.  Clip in onto your bedroom door and you have got dozens of different exercises you can easily do to shape and tone all major muscle groups.  You can make the exercise more difficult by standing farther away from where the resistance band is attached.  The further it has to stretch for you to complete your rep, the harder it is going to be for you.

You don’t have to use it just at home either.  Keep it in your backpack next time you go for a jog in the park.  Once your warmed up and your heart is pumping, wrap your resistance band around a tree and enjoy a phenomenal workout in the fresh air.

In my hotel room during business trips, I attach it to the bathroom door and do a full body exercise while watching an in-room movie and waiting for my room service to arrive.  If you are constantly on the go and have barely any time for a workout, this is a great product for you.

While resistance bands are wonderful for getting you toned, you are going to need different home gym exercise equipment to get bigger muscles.  But don’t worry, I’ve got that covered for you as well.
